A guide to repairing cavities and stopping decay in its tracks with cosmetic composite fillings
Sac Dentist always strives to provide cavity-free checkups as a true dental “home” for your family. We partner closely with our patients from across the Sacramento and greater Carmichael, California area on good brushing and flossing techniques, helpful oral care products, and professional preventative services to keep the decay away. And, when earlier-stage decay is found, we have a great way to stop it in its tracks – with composite dental fillings.
What are composite fillings?
These fillings are often called “tooth-colored” alternatives to silver-colored metal amalgam fillings. They are also completely metal-free. Instead, composite is made of resin and glass/quartz particles. The color of this material can be matched, so it blends in well with the rest of the tooth and its natural neighbors.
So, is the filling placed inside the tooth?
Fillings generally “work” by replacing the tooth structure that gets eroded away due to progressive decay. As decay eats away at the tooth, it creates little holes or cavities. The filling is designed to be placed in that cavity. Once secured, it “fills in” the hole and restores the tooth to its healthy strength, structure, function, and appearance.
Will it hurt?
Cavities are a form of decay associated with discomfort and sensitivity to heat, cool temperatures, and sweet foods and beverages. However, the treatment itself should not cause any additional discomfort or sensitivity. Dr. Steven Phan expertly administers an anesthetic to numb the tooth before we prepare it. That way, you will not feel anything as the natural tooth is prepared before placing the filling.
How do you prepare the tooth?
We don’t want to put a Band-Aid on the problem, so we must remove any damaged or diseased tissue before placing the filling. Dr. Phan uses precise techniques and special instruments to remove damaged tooth structures. Depending on your needs, we may also apply a special liner to calm down a symptomatic tooth. Only after this preparation is done can we move forward with the actual placement, shaping, and polishing of the filling.
Does my filling need special care?
Fillings are low-maintenance. You need to brush and floss them like you brush and floss your natural teeth. You do not want to fall into any bad habits or behaviors that may have led to the cavity forming in the first place. Otherwise, the treated tooth will be vulnerable to future damage. Regular checkups and cleanings at Sac Dentist must complement your home care. With good care, no further treatment will be needed. You avoid the increasing pain, severe symptoms, and extensive dental work associated with more advanced forms of decay.Â
