We see it as a responsibility and privilege to provide you with trusted insights on dental procedures, including emergency services. Here, our team has answered seven of the most commonly asked questions about dental care when “the worst” happens.
How do I know if it’s an emergency?
If you are concerned about any changes in how your teeth and mouth feel or look, it’s important to contact us immediately. Problems with the mouth do not go away on their own. They only worsen and become bigger issues requiring more costly, aggressive, and time-consuming treatment.
What are some examples of emergencies you’ve treated?
Dental emergencies can be many different things. We have promptly and effectively treated everything from more “acute” or sudden issues (like trauma to the mouth, such as a tooth getting knocked out) to more chronic issues (such as dental abscesses or infections caused by progressive decay).
What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?
Aside from calling us right away to come to our office ASAP, we suggest that you place the tooth back in your mouth. Take great care not to damage any of the soft tissues that are attached to the tooth. If it’s too much of a swallowing risk or you can’t safely reintroduce the tooth, place it in a container with milk. The milk helps to nourish the ligaments connected to the tooth, which increases the odds of it being successfully “reimplanted” and our ability to “save” the tooth.
How do you treat dental emergencies?
It depends on the emergency or the underlying source of the problem. We can preserve even infected teeth that cause intense toothaches with predictable treatments like root canal therapy.
What if my tooth can’t be saved?
No worries! If it’s an essential tooth (not a third molar or wisdom tooth) causing your pain, swelling, and other symptoms, we will want to replace it promptly. Sac Dental provides the most advanced options for tooth replacement, including implant crowns, bridges, and dentures.
Can I prevent dental emergencies?
Yes, many oral problems can be prevented with services like regular professional teeth cleanings at our office and oral appliances like mouthguards (to protect against sports-related dental injuries) and nightguards (to prevent damage caused by chronic teeth grinding).
What can I do at home to ease the pain right away?
When you call us, we can provide instructions on relieving symptoms immediately. For instance, you can ease swelling and pain with warm H₂O (mix ~half a teaspoon of salt with one cup of water). Adding items like a warm compress, topical products like Orajel™, and specialized dental cement/adhesive (for dislodged crowns and dental restorations) to your dental First-Aid kit is also a good idea. Only use other medications to help with pain, as your dentist advises.
